Fred Cress was an artist known for his abstract and figurative paintings. He was born in Poona, British Raj, in 1938 and moved to England with his parents in 1948. Cress studied at the Birmingham College of Art in England before migrating to Australia in 1962 as a "ten pound Pom."

During his career, Cress held numerous solo exhibitions in Australia, Europe, and the United States. His works can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Queensland Art Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, among others.

Cress was known for his commitment to his craft and his willingness to take risks in his artistic pursuits. His contributions to the Australian art scene have been widely recognized, and he is remembered as a significant figure in the country's cultural history.

Cress initially painted figuratively but became well known for his abstract work in the late 60s and 70s. In the late 80s, he returned to figurative painting and won the Archibald Prize with a portrait of his friend and colleague, John Beard. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2003 for his services to visual arts.

Cress bought a 17th-century stone farmhouse in Southern Burgundy, France, in 1990 and spent half the year there and half the year in Sydney with his partner, the photographer Victoria Fernandez. Many of his later works were influenced by his time spent in France.

In January 2003, Cress was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In 2009, he declined further treatment and worked on his last exhibition, entitled 'End Game One,' held at the Australian Galleries in Paddington. He died on 14 October 2009.9
